Hey there, WWT People! Regular class is canceled this week. Please go to your conference at the Cafe at Barnes & Noble on Rowan's campus! See you there!
I've assigned myself my own Blog Assignment for my Very Own Niche called #WWT, a FAB gathering of hard-working individuals who are just trying to be awesome. I get that! Listen, I know it's hard to write, I mean WRITE something that an Interested Audience is dying to read. Of course not dying, but interested, in a competitive world where attention is fleeting. Turns out, to do that well *with words* takes practice. But not the practice of just writing more and more (although it may seem like that), but to bring thinking into the process, which is really just hard. Especially as women. There I said it. But it's just true that we tend to hear criticism from women teachers as silly, annoying mothers with crazy opinions. I know because I have one too.
So, in the meantime, I'm here to thank you for taking on this class and being willing to participate. I love your blogs! OMG! I love each and every one of your blogs so very heartily. But because I am a busy person, I'm mostly NOT saying that in my feedback. For this I am sorry. In the meantime, instead of pleasant words, I offer ideas. I would like you to consider that I am honestly dumping a lot of ideas on you. Just read it and think about it and do what you do. But to be fair, I want you to know that I will hold your writing up to challenging standards. So, a hint: try to show some love for the writing and NOT have it be about checking something off a list because you will be earning your A soon after performing this task. Good, but really Excellent writing simply takes more than that.
I'm am aware of the irony that my job seems to be hurting you with words (that criticize) while asking you to create craft that will win the audience!. I'm simply being honest about my job and trying to bridge-a-difficult-divide. I do sincerely sympathize with how it feels to be criticized, and I've had students who will never ever willingly go in the direction I am pointing, and that is totally fine. But here's the message: I am committed to having your experience be positive, awesome, and if possible, transformative. I know that's not always possible. We do what we do.
In the meantime, I'm worried that my feedback has been read with harsh intent, not because it's true, but because I know students will project something malicious in criticism. I hope you see that have only with the most sincere of intentions. Okay, you're right about the road to hell. Hell may only exist metaphorically, but there is always some truth in the comparison. So as penance, I hereby promise to do my best over the next week to comment with the same degree of thought I would wish others would have with me. I am always aware that line is not always easy to detect, but I would like you know that I take your perception seriously. If you don't understand, think I am wrong, or otherwise just want to bat ideas around. That is what I am here for! Please ask anything. I know I can count on my afternoon class for PLENTY of questions. Or at least, I hope you'll keep it up after you've had plenty of rest and sun and sleep starting right now! Feedback is hard. I know that. Maybe even more hard right here when you should only be thinking about Daytona Beach or Cancun or just your bed. Probably the best thing for you to do if you've gotten feedback is just to read and relax with it for a few days anyway. Maybe you tinker with ideas, but don't make it be about a deadline or grade. Honestly, I wish you to have fun. For crying out loud. Go have FUN now! Just a note for anyone who hasn't yet scheduled a conference or who needs to to change h/er time. Just in: I have to take my son to the orthodontist (yikes!) on Tue at 10:45, so that whole slot in there should be in gray, sadly. (Deleted 3 sentences) Please don't hesitate to comment here on the blog or send me an email if you don't see an open time that works for you here. I am committed to meeting with each and every one of you to make sure that you can find the awesomeness in this mashup assignment! This is my new information.
Hi WRT students!
I am blogging for the purpose of relaying my plan for next week (3/10-13, the week before spring break). I would like to cancel Monday's class (3/10) in order to meet with those students who were snowed out or have had other conflicts arise. To get the ball rolling, I am going to propose a schedule for next Monday based on this weeks, which would look something like the following: Noon: Victoria Woodside 12:30 Rachel Ackerman 1:00 Brianne O'Leary 1:30 Nicole Salerno 2:00 2:30 3:00 Madison Pagliaccetti As you can see, there are 2 spots open there in the middle, and if I have to, I might be able to create an opening before noon (though I do teach another class that morning). So, if you're reading this blog and you have NOT met with me and are not scheduled to, then please let me know if either of these times will work, and if not, then when a good time would be. I would prefer that you use the comment section of this blog to respond. Also, fyi, our class WILL indeed meet on Wed 3/12. At that point, you should have COMPLETED the following: 1) Tweeting Maxims assignment 2) the Twitterive (all drafts complete) 3) Youtube ALL Conversations (and complete the page on your Weebly site) In addition to the above assignments, please make sure that you are staying up with the reading (Hall, chapters 1-7 are the most pressing and challenging) and blogging! After meeting with a number of students, it has become clear that quite a few are getting very behind. I would encourage you to do your very best to catch up, because the final project (the video mashup), while fun, is extremely time consuming. Not to over-dramatize the situation, but if you find that you do NOT have these 3 assignments complete by next Wed, you should be aware that you are in very real danger of failing the class; and you could not possibly expect to receive a grade above C or D in the course. I hate to end on such a sour note, so I will sign off by saying how excited and proud I am of the work many of you are doing on your Twitterive! Truly inspiring! Onward! Hi, I'm Cindy. Welcome to my site. Don't really have anything much to say here right now, but if you're reading. Post a comment just for the heck of it. That way we'll all feel better knowing that someone out there is reading something that we've written.
